iPhone Questions

So, $199 for an 8GB iPhone with 3G and $299 for the 16GB version. What I didn’t get from watching the coverage is whether or not this is a subsidized price that requires a 2 year contract. Part of me hopes that doesn’t require a contract so that I can get one at a nice price, but another part of me wants that to be a contract price. If that’s a contract price, then I will have a better shot of selling my older iPhone for $199 or so. I don’t really mind having to get a 2 year contract.

Another question I have is about the GPS. The news coverage showed a pulsating dot on Google Maps, but I am assuming you’ll have to have EDGE/3G/constant WiFi in the first place to be able to get the Google Maps. I’d like to know whether or not they will have third party GPS software that can use the built in GPS, or even if the new software will let my 2G iPhone receive data from my bluetooth GPS unit.

I guess more information will be available once the app store is out.
