iPhone Questions

June 9, 2008 – 10:58 am

So, $199 for an 8GB iPhone with 3G and $299 for the 16GB version. What I didn’t get from watching the coverage is whether or not this is a subsidized price that requires a 2 year contract. Part of me hopes that doesn’t require a contract so that I can get one at a nice price, but another part of me wants that to be a contract price. If that’s a contract price, then I will have a better shot of selling my older iPhone for $199 or so. I don’t really mind having to get a 2 year contract.

Another question I have is about the GPS. The news coverage showed a pulsating dot on Google Maps, but I am assuming you’ll have to have EDGE/3G/constant WiFi in the first place to be able to get the Google Maps. I’d like to know whether or not they will have third party GPS software that can use the built in GPS, or even if the new software will let my 2G iPhone receive data from my bluetooth GPS unit.

I guess more information will be available once the app store is out.

Wii Fit - “You’ve got amazing ab strength”

May 22, 2008 – 11:14 pm

I finished up the strength exercises today. I started with the jackknife be/c I did so poorly on that last time. The last time I played, I only touched the board once or twice during the exercise, and that was a 20 point dud. So, in my first try today, I didn’t touch the board at all. Um, yeah, that was a 0 point dud. After that I realized that you’re supposed to touch the board when you lower your feet. When I did it properly, I got a perfect 100 pt score.

The lunge exercise was not too hard for me, and I scored a 50 left / 50 right perfect score there. Although it was easy, I could feel that my thighs were being worked.

The rowing squat wasn’t very intuitive. I didn’t hear what the trainer said about keeping the dot below the blue bar, so I kept it above. That led to a bad score, and after correcting myself, I got a 93.

The single leg twist was a much faster exercise than I expected. The faster twist made this easy but not enough for me to score as well … just a 36 left / 40 right

I unlocked the Jackknife challenge where you “challenge your trainer to see who can do more Jackknivess”. The trainer was pretty lame and only did 10 reps. What kind of a challenge is that, especially when you have to do 10 reps during the normal exercise … I am guessing that the next time I do the challenge it’ll be more than 20.

Since I finished the strength exercises, I moved on to the aerobics. The hula hoops was fun, although the counter threw me off. As I did a big loop, it counted as more than one. I said I did 226 loops which was obviously way more than I did in the alloted time. The don’t tell you outright how to get a high score, but I think it’s just to swing your hips amazingly fast in big loops.

The step exercise was a big dud for me. It was sort of like DDR but with a step. I only got 2 perfects =( I need to figure out what I’m supposed to do with the blue steps to the left/right. I don’t think I was following the Mii’s properly.

I skipped the running exercises. I wasn’t interested in running in place tonight.

Finally, I got to try the balance games. They were fun! I’d say they all require some mastery. For the ski slalom, I have to remember not to overcompensate and to also lean forward more. Leaning forward increases your speed, but I think that’s also at the expense of your maneuverability. The ski jump was fun, but I’m not sure what gets you a better score. I started down the slope with my dot centered where it was supposed to be, but I am not sure when you’re supposed to begin your lifting and if you’re supposed to do it fast or powerfully. The tightrope walking was strange. I wasn’t sure what made my Mii move forward faster, and when I got to the bear trap, I jumped and missed the rope on my landing.

Finally, to end the day, I took a Body Test. My weight was down 3.3 pounds, but I’m guessing that’s mostly be/c I am still losing the weight from eating big meals earlier in the week. Anyhow, I’m glad to be closer to where I am normally. The balance tests this time was a stability test where you had to balance on one foot and a agility test where you had to shift your weight in the the right direction to guide your dot towards blue boxes. Fun.

So, my stats for the day with the nice compliments the trainer gives …
jackknife - 100 pts (body builder) - “You’ve got amazing ab strength
lunges - 100 pts (body builder) - “Great! You’re pretty strong aren’t you?”
rowing squat - 93 pts (body builder) “Great, you’re pretty strong
single leg twist - 36 / 40 (fitness enthusiast)

hula hoops - 226 (calorie roaster)
step - 146 (calorie burner)

ski slalom - 1:03:98
ski jump - 271 (professional)
the ball thing - 40 pts (level 5)
tightrope - 19 yds (unbalanced)
balance bubble - 901 (unbalanced)

Fitness age: 33
Weight loss since yesterday (-3.3)

Overly Fit - is it possible?

May 22, 2008 – 7:43 pm

Sure, it’s possible, but I don’t imagine it’s going to happen to me in a true fitness sense. It will, and has already begun, in a funky web site sort of way.

Enter http://overlyfit.com, my Wii Fit related site.

Knowing that I can throw together a site on a whim is a curse. I get a lot of crazy domain name ideas in my head, and the name “overly fit” just came to mind as I was thinking of words that would combine “over” and “fit”. Now I just have to put the darn site together.

Here I will put some of my Drupal skills to work. I read a lot about different Drupal modules that I haven’t been able to use at work, so this will be just another test bed. Let’s see how this turns out …

You have great posture!

May 21, 2008 – 10:20 pm

So, my BMI is higher than it should be. That’s not news to me. Heh, I’ve set a goal of getting it down to the “normal” level of 25. I’ve given myself 2 months to do it. I think it said I need to lose 3 pounds every two weeks. That sounds easy enough.

I only did the first set of yoga balance exercises and half of the strength exercises today. Here are my results:

deep breathing: 98 pts (yoga master)
half moon: 69 pts (yoga novice) … apparently I scored twice as high bending to the left
warrior: 75 pts (yoga trainer)
tree: 73 pts (yoga trainer)
sun salutation: 96 (yoga master)

single leg extension: 79 pts (fitness enthusiast)
pushups and side plank: 57 pts (fitness enthusiast)
torso twists: 88 pts (fitness enthusiast)
jackknife: 20 pts (couch potato)

I did most of these twice be/c I wasn’t 100% sure how to do these. I am fairly flexible, and so the yoga poses were easy, but being flexible while maintaining balance was a new twist. At least they give you something visual to check yourself. The red dot in the yellow circle works for me. What doesn’t work for me is the whistles and not being able to see the screen while doing some of the exercises. That jackknife is jacked! From the example, I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to keep my feed in the air all the time, or if I was supposed to bring them onto the board after each. Couldn’t I have just kept my feet in the air the whole time and not moved? How would it be able to calculate a score??

Anyhow, that was an entertaining first 30 minutes with the Wii Fit. I think the games will be more fun. The aerobics will probably be where the challange kicks in more.

To gauge how I’m doing, I wonder if I should continue my pseudo daily regimen of light weight lifting, or if I should only do the Wii Fit. I think I’ll do both, as long as I’m not sore, which I don’t forsee til I unlock the higher reps.

Wii Fit - Day 1

May 21, 2008 – 7:16 pm

I had planned on waking up early to be at Target at 8am, but sleeping an extra 2 hours was more appealing. Victor IM’d me that he got one at Circuit City on the way to work. When I checked CC, they showed that they had stock, but he was guessing that the online system wasn’t up to date since the CC he went to had enough people in line to buy out whatever they had in stock.

I took a chance and called Gamestop around 12. I doubted they’d have any since they might have allocated all of their stock to pre-orders. Luckily, they had extras, and I rushed over there. I got a Wii Fit and a Wii console for a coworker. I was surprised that they even had those in stock.

I’m charging some AA batteries as I write this. Once they’re charged, I’m off to be fit!

OpenID and database store problems

May 15, 2008 – 5:06 pm

grrr, the file store works all the time, but when I switch to the database store, I consistently get a “OpenID authentication failed: Bad signature” error.

I checked the database, and the `openid_associations` table has an entry, but the `openid_nonces` table doesn’t. I checked my account activity at myvidoop.com and it shows that I have a “Trusted site login”, so it sounds like everything is good on their side.

So, I tried again with my openid.org account, but this time I chose “NO, do not Share this Data”, and it worked.

So, what’s the deal?! argh, so much inconsistency in this …

GrandCentral invitation needed …

May 14, 2008 – 11:21 am

For my iPhone,  I would like to test a t-mobile prepaid account along with the AT&T prepaid account in the near future … I am going to discontinue my Verizon phone account, and since I’ll be moving to a prepaid account, I don’t think I can keep my current phone number. I don’t mind getting a new number since I am now living in a different city, but I don’t want to switch numbers as I test the prepaid accounts.

If I had a GrandCentral account, I could give out that number and have it linked to whatever prepaid number I’m using at the time. Now I just need a GrandCentral invitation …

Testing Zenbe

May 14, 2008 – 1:30 am

It didn’t take long in my test of zenbe to notice something I don’t like. The browser back button always takes you back to the login page! The site is built with so much ajax, that I wasn’t surprised that this happened, however that doesn’t make things better. Maybe they can redirect you to the main screen before kicking off the ajax stuff. That way, the back button would never take you to the login page, or so I think …

I tried sending and receiving email from different accounts. The emails I sent weren’t received very quickly, and the emails I wanted to receive within zenbe didn’t appear right away either. My Yahoo mail doesn’t seem to exhibit slowness, so maybe I’m just too impatient.

I will say that with the new domains I’ve bought, I will have to check a lot of email accounts, and being able to access all of them from a single webmail application will be nice. Zenbe has a lot of other features which I’ll have to try out later.

Kohana and OpenID

May 14, 2008 – 1:14 am

Tonight, I started playing with Kohana and OpenID, thanks to the OpenID module from http://code.google.com/p/kohanamodules/. I ran the authentication example with a OpenID I got from openid.org, but I kept getting a “Bad Signature” error. I wasn’t sure if it had anything to do with how I do my development work on my laptop, so I tried it with a test subdomain on my hosted server account, and it worked. Not quite satisfied with that, I got an OpenID from https://myvidoop.com/ and tried it on my laptop, and it worked!

Hmm, was my failure the first time due to user error or my OpenID from openid.org? For now, since it’s late, I don’t really care. myvidoop looks like it’ll be a much better site to manage my OpenID account in the long run. I’m just happy to know that I can continue to do development work on my laptop and don’t have to put everything on-line to test.

The next thing to figure out is why I am getting a bad signature error when I use the database driver instead of the file driver. After that, then I can figure out how to tie this all into some of the Auth module.

Converting to the iPhone

May 12, 2008 – 11:54 am

I bought my iPhone in April when AT&T had the $249 refurb special. I got it just before I went to Taiwan, so I didn’t bother activating it for use in the US. I did, however, unlock it and use it in Taiwan.

Now that I’m back, and my Verizon account is about to bill another month, I think I should finally switch to using the iPhone as a phone and not just a toy. The phone is unlocked now, compliments of iLiberty+, and so the options I’m considering are:

1. t-mobile prepaid
2. at&t prepaid with unlimited data

I’m not a heavy phone user, so prepaid probably works better for me. The at&t prepaid with unlimited data is $20/month, and that sounds interesting since I think I can use Skype for incoming and outgoing calls, assuming that Fring works properly. If I can use Skype, then I won’t have to get dinged 25 cents/minute for the prepaid usage.

The t-mobile option I’m considering is buying a prepaid card that would get me 10 cents/minute but with no data. I never had data with my Verizon phone, so I am thinking that I could live without it on the iPhone …

I’ve got another week before the next billing cycle starts on my Verizon phone. Maybe I should try Skype and Fring and see how the combination works and then decide.
